2012 Hairstyle Trends: Vintage Victory Roll Updo’s and Long Fishtail Braids

When it comes to hairstyles, the cycle just continues to go around in circles like a game of duck, duck, goose. Each time the style comes back around, however, there always seems to be a little spice added to bring it up-to-date.

Shown below, Alicia Keys is photographed wearing a 1940’s Victory Roll. The back is under-braided moving towards the top of the head, where the roll begins. The victory roll was once achieved with large pincurls, but with new techniques, large rollers and/or hot curlers work just as well.

The look was spotted on the Dita Von Teese runway during the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival (LMFF) on March 10, 2012 in Australia. Models walked the runway saloon girl style in sexy lingerie, and single, reverse victory roll ponytails.

The look was also spotted for “Something Old, Something New” (S.O.S.N.) boutique’s Spring 2012 fashion show, which took place on March 4, 2012 in Los Angeles, CA.

Here, the models wore victory roll side bangs, with long fishtail ponytails.

Cassie recently took us on a tour of inside her closet, where she sported the updo, adding a full mohawk, deep wave twist to it.

As you can see, there are a few ways to play around with this look to make it work for you, or simply just to switch it up. For more on this trend, you can check out Ashanti with a version of the hairstyle in her latest video “The Woman You Love” HERE.
