A retired Florida police officer claims he “lost it” after his son cursed, tackled, and punched him during a heated argument over child custody issues.

Timothy Allen Davis Senior, 47, was charged with first-degree murder after police said he shot Timothy Davis Jr. once in the chest with a handgun at the family's detached house in Apopka.

He reportedly told investigators he 'got into a funk' and had 'lost it' by the time he pulled the trigger.

David Sr. worked for the Orlando police force for 18 years before retiring in 2006 as a lieutenant, while his son was a former high school football star who played as a defensive lineman for the University of Alabama.

The senior Davis was found with his arms around his child, apologizing to him, when police arrived at the home on Kings Eagle Lane in Apopka at 6.30pm on Saturday.
