Beauty Treatments: Natural Home Remedies Using Lemons

Lemons are widely used in home beauty preparations. If you mix it with Aloe Vera, it can be used as a cleanser. Some people use them diluted with water as toners for oily skin.

Many experts and books recommend lemons for skin hyper-pigmentation (darker areas in the skin or pregnancy marks).

Lemons can also be used as deodorants for the armpits or feet. The list of the lemon's benefits is extensive.

Lemon essential oil has the same properties as fresh lemons and can be used interchangeably. Its clean aroma helps to uplift our spirit and calm the nerves. However, it's said that it should not be used prior to sleeping since lemons make us energetic and uplifted.

You should note that anything in excess is bad. So first and foremost, do not ingest it in large amounts because it may cause acidity.

It's said that lemons as well as other citrus fruits cause skin photosensitivity . In other words, it makes the skin more sensitive to the sun. For this reason if you apply lemon or lemon essential oil to your skin, do not expose your body to the sun for a few hours. Lemon can also irritate your skin, so exercise caution when applying undiluted over you face. And of course some people may be allergic to lemons.

HOME RECIPES

Hand and feet exfoliate

Mix lemon and brown sugar or salt and apply with a rubbing effect over hands and/or feet especially in rough areas. Rinse with water and notice how fresh and soft the skin feels. Apply a body/foot lotion thereafter. You may want to do this once a week if your hands and feet are in need of tender care.

Facemask for normal or oily skin

This is what you will need: One small banana, a teaspoon of honey, and 8 drops of lemon (more if you prefer). Apply over clean face and leave it on for about 5 to 10 minutes. Cleanse it with warm water and apply toner and moisturizer.

Solution for dark elbows and knees

Are your elbows and knees a bit darker than the rest of your skin? The following recipe can help you to bring them back to their natural color and make them soft. It can also be used on the feet. Take one tablespoon of a light vegetable oil such as almond or a light olive oil (You can also use canola oil), 15 drops of lemon juice or 4 drops of lemon essential oil, and one teaspoon of honey. Apply over clean skin. Leave it on for about 10 minutes and rinse with warm water. Remember lemon causes photosensitivity; so do this in the evening or do not expose yourself to the sun for a few hours after the treatment.

Highlights

Lemon can help you to create the highlight effect during summer. Lemons dry out the hair so be careful not use this recipe too often. Prepare ahead of time a cup with warm water and lemon juice (about one lemon should be enough but it depends how long your hair is). Application is very easy: after shampooing, apply the lemon water on the hair and leave it on.

Nail problems

If your nails have stains or are weak, you may apply some lemon juice mixed with water, after washing them. Leave it on for a few minutes. If you do it frequently, it will help your nails look healthier and shiny.  Works great when you do not want to go to a nail salon.
