I tried hard to make sense of the highly spirited dance moves being performed during a Sunday service at Bishop Eddie Long's New Birth Missionary Baptist Church located in Atlanta, GA. And after doing a little research, the only thing I could come up with is that some forms of dancing in the church is considered normal. The name they have for this type of dancing is “Interpretive Dance,” which involves a lot of expression with the hands with the sole purpose of telling a story. (learn more)
What's not normal, however, is the way “The Durty Boyz” over at Hot 107.9 in Atlanta took the movements the “New Birth” church members were making and made them appear demonic. SMH (God forgive me for laughing a little).
It's evident that “New Birth” were hyped up a bit and clearly have their own style of spiritual dance, but a more toned down version of interpretive dancing can be seen in the following video randomly selected from Youtube. In the video, you can see there's a story being told that can easily be understood.
