Meet The Lady Behind MDMflow Brand Cosmetics
This is a story we hear far too often where people of color are not satisfied with the number of opportunities presented to them, and in many cases, the shades of makeup available on the market, so they take some initiative and create their own lines.
Florence Adepoju (“Flow” to her friends) was one of those people. Her frustration at not being able to find colors that suited her was compounded by a feeling that beauty brands were not being effectively marketed to young women.
Flow is a great example of how following your own plan and sticking to it pays off. She launched her own hip hop-inspired beauty brand MDMflow by making lipsticks in her parents’ garden shed in Rainham, Essex. Now, three years later her brand is stocked in Topshop.
Beyoncé and her Black Panther backing dancers proudly declaring their natural hair at the Super Bowl (“I like my baby heir with baby hair and afros”) sent the internet into meltdown but it was a reflection of a wider movement of black women choosing to “go natural” and just be themselves. In a recent interview, Adepoju claims she is doing just that. “With MDMflow I’m doing what I want and I’m being me.”
