Dry Hair: Possible Causes and Solutions

October 5, 2015

Dry hair is hair that does not have enough moisture and oil to maintain its normal sheen and texture.

Dry hair may result from too much washing, harsh detergents, inadequate diet, too much time in the sun, over-processing from chemicals, heat styling, or plain neglect. Dry hair can also be a sign of underlying health conditions, therefore it’s always a good idea to speak with your health care provider if normal hair care maintenance solutions are not working for you.

Feed your hair from the inside out. Drink plenty of water daily.

Take a multivitamin and mineral. Make sure you get plenty of rest every day.

You need to protect your hair from the elements of the environment and the harsh effects of chemical treatments. If you have any chemical processes in your hair, such as; bleaching, perms, dyes etc. you will have dry hair as a result. If you combine heat styling with these chemical procedures, you are adding insult to injury. The first basic rule of thumb is to discover your own natural hairstyle and work with that best. Seeking the guidance of a professional is advised.

Make sure that you have your hair regularly trimmed as this will help to keep split ends at bay, which also furthers to damage your hair.

Shampoo less frequently. Make sure that you purchase shampoo specifically designed for dry/damaged hair and check to make sure it is ph balanced.

To protect your hair from damage from the environment, wear a hat when in direct sunlight.

There are many products on the market today which are excellent deep penetrating conditioners as well as leave in conditioners. It cannot be emphasized enough how important conditioners are for dry and damaged hair.
