Learning the story of how Gabrielle “Gabby” Douglas, 16, rose and became an Olympian for the 2012 Olympics in London is sure to make you shed a tear of joy. What makes her story even more special is that she is one of only two American women who will compete for gold in the all-around gymnastics final. If Gabby takes home the medal this Thursday (August 2, 2012), it will make her the first African American to ever do so.
Gabby's mom was a brave woman to step aside, and let her daughter pursue her dream, by sending her off to West Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 14 to train with Liang Chow. Today, Gabby's mother couldn't be more proud for making such a difficult decision, and receiving such a rewarding outcome.
