New York City Councilwoman Margaret Chin wants to make buying counterfeit goods illegal. A bill she proposed on Thursday (April 28) would subject anyone who buys counterfeit designer merchandise to arrest for a misdemeanor punishable by a year in jail or a $1,000 fine.
“We don't want to be known as the place to come to get counterfeit goods,” said Councilwoman Chin, whose district includes Chinatown. “It's a very big problem. People are still coming, and the industry is growing, and we have to stop the demand. We need people to know that they are feeding this demand."
