The family of Oscar Grant held a press conference in Oakland on Saturday, July 10 to address a letter of apology that was issued on Sunday, July 4 by former BART officer Johannes Mehserle.
The letter which was hand-written four days before a California jury found Mehserle guilty of involuntary manslaughter, was asked to be released to “the public” and can be read here.
Grant's family told reporters on Saturday that the letter of apology from Mehserle should have come much sooner and should have been directed to them personally.
In a nutshell, they point out reasons to believe the letter was not sincere, in fact, it was “garbage.” The letter, they believe, was nothing more than a political letter to help convince the jury to go light on their verdict.
