PLEASE VOTE: Project Style 2012 - Outfit Under $150 (Spring/Summer Trends)

A little over a month ago I was playing around and entered a contest called "Project Style." The contest is held annually and is nationwide, with 4 rounds of winners in various malls. The round winner for each mall competes against each other, before a winner is selected to go on to compete against other mall winners for the grand prize.

To my surprise I was selected as a semi-finalist in round one for The Shops at Tanforan Mall in San Bruno, CA. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but it's all fun and lots of styling, with free money to shop, so I figured why not just keep going? For this next installment of round one, the rules were to shop for an outfit that cost no more than $150, put together a video that didn't exceed 60 seconds showing off the outfit, and posting the video, along with a few photos so everyone can vote, vote, vote. I only had one week to do all of this, and because I wasn't expecting to win, I have to share with you that making a 60 second video that was worth me posting was the hardest ever. It was a learn as you go along, and learn as fast as you can kind of moment.

The outfit I chose as a semi-finalist was inspired by current Spring/Summer 2012 trends. Some of those trends include jumpsuits/playsuits, color blocks, bright colors, and mixed prints. I kept the look simple and clean, topping everything off with a splash of mixed bright colors and geometric prints. So, tell me: How do I look? Please visit the Project Style website, register or log in with your Facebook account, and VOTE. Voting begins May 15, 2012, and you can vote as many times as you like (once per day) through May 30, 2012 at: http://www.theshopsattanforan.com/project-style/61Thank You.Sonya

Gabrielle Union Speaks on Skin Cancer and The Importance of Using Sunscreen

Actress Gabrielle Union has joined the fight against skin cancer. And as a spokesperson for the skincare brand, Neutrogena, she is working with the company's new Choose Skin Health campaign, that aims to educate people on how to prevent it.

With Summer knocking at our doors, and preparations for spending more time in the sun is on the menu, Union wants everyone to know that black CAN crack if you don't use sunscreen.
“I don’t tan on purpose, but I do a lot of beach workouts,” the Think Like a Man star tells PEOPLE. “But I go SPF 110,” she jokes, pointing to two bottles of sunscreen. “I don’t mess around.”
“As an African-American woman, culturally we have been told that we have natural protection against the sun -- but we’re absolutely part of the one in five,” Union explains. “As I’ve gotten older, I’ve seen relatives’ moles change shape, and they think ‘That’s cute -- it’s like Janet Jackson!’ But it’s not cute -- it’s called melanoma.”

The actress, who calls Miami and Los Angeles home, has incorporated SPF into her “painfully simple” daily skincare regime. “I use a grapefruit cleanser because it smells good and it’s got salicylic acid,” she reveals. “If I’m having a breakout I’ll use something that’s acne specific, but usually it’s always my clear pore astringent and my trusty sunblock.”
Along with a low-maintenance skincare routine, the ageless actress opts for minimal makeup when she’s not working. “I pop on some lip gloss and mascara and I keep it moving,” she says.
For more information on the Choose Skin Health campaign be sure to visit their website.
You should also be aware, there's been a lot of controversy lately about which brands of sunscreen are considered safe. While dermatologists determined most ingredients used in sunscreens are safe (including oxybenzone), The Environmental Working Group have advised that to make the safe list, sunscreens must be free of oxybenzone, retinyl palmitate (a type of vitamin A), not have SPF above 50 and protect against UVA and UVB sunrays (read more).

Video Fashion: Nicki Minaj Goes Vintage in "Right By My Side" ft Chris Brown

Nicki Minaj premiered the video for her single "Right By My Side" ft. Chris Brown today. The video co-stars rapper Nas, and is quite romantic. It's also filled with so much fresh vintage fashion, I have to bring you one outfit at a time in separate posts.

In one scene with Chris Brown, Nicki is shown wearing a yellow Tulle skirt, a vintage denim jacket with an animal print side patch and leather detail, a sheer blue top, a pair of mixed animal print wedges, and a vintage Versace (Spring 1992) Tote Bag (available at DEPUIS 1924). The only other celebrity seen wearing this bag is Lady Gaga during the two months she committed herself to wearing nothing but pieces from the Versace brand.

Adding more vintage flare, Nicki topped her look off with blonde hair, lots of gold neckpieces (including a vintage Chanel double chain with logo charm (available at DEPUIS 1924), gold trimmed vintage Versace mod sunglasses (available at DEPUIS 1924), a Agent Provocateur Leopard-Print Calf Hair Driving Glove on one hand, and a Vintage (1980-1990) Chanel Bangle Bracelet (available at DEPUIS 1924) and Chanel (1997) Quilted Leather Bangle Bracelet (available at DEPUIS 1924) on one arm.

Watch the video for "Right By My Side" below, and be on the lookout for more details on the vintage fashion ensembles Nicki Minaj is wearing in future posts.

Trya Banks Visits Good Morning America and Weighs In on Models Being Too Thin

Former supermodel Tyra Banks made her appearance on Good Morning America today (May 16) in NYC, and commended VOGUE magazine for banning underage models and models who appear too thin.

"This is a really big deal, because it's been an unspoken rule in my opinion, and a lot of models opinions that the fashion inudstry says it's okay to be as skinny, as skinny, as skinny as you can, just as long as you can be able to stand up and walk and that you don't faint." So, it's a very big deal that "Vogue is taking the initiative to say No, we are not going to condone this..." The question is, why did it take so long?

Whitney Houston's Pastor -- Marvin Winans Robbed and Carjacked in Detoit‎

A group of men who either didn't know, or didn't care who Pastor Marvin Winans was, robbed and carjacked him at a Detroit gas station Wednesday afternoon.
Pastor Winans, who was roughed up a little, but not harmed, told Action News he felt something was wrong when he came out of the gas station's convenience store. He says at-least ten guys were inside the store, and four of the men followed him out and assaulted him while he was pumping gas. They robbed him, punched him and even ripped off his pants. Pastor Winans says he's ok, but is more saddened that it has come to this.
“This kind of nonsense just has to stop… it’s just the savageness of what’s happening in the streets. We just have to take a look at ourselves and say this has to stop,” said Pastor Winans.

Obama's Support of Gay Marriage Has Many Black Churches Withdrawing Support

President Barack Obama's support of gay marriage is a heated topic of discussion right now, with many in the African American community feeling as if they've been thrown under the bus in order for Obama to get the gay vote. Several black churches have even gone as far as withdrawing their support for Obama in the upcoming election. While Fox News contributor Deneen Borelli is among those who are negative about Obama's decision to support gay marriage, radio talk show host Santita Jackson had this to say:"Obama is the President of the United States, he's not the pastor of the United States," said Santita. "He made a political announcement, not a prophetic pronouncement. I think those that are going to stay home, were going to stay home anyway.... African American's, those who vote, WILL be voting for President Obama, because we understand that he is the CEO of the government. A government that has a constitution that he has sworn to uphold. A government that has a constitution that protects ALL Americans (red, yellow, black, brown and white, straight, and gay). And this government separates church and state, and it enables all of us to have life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, and live by our faith, in our faith, but under the law which covers everybody."

Woman Loses Legs and Arms After Receiving Unlicensed Butt Injections

Here's another reason to appreciate and take care of the body you have, and leave the cosmetic alterations alone.
April Brown was once a cosmetologist, fashion designer, and working mother of two daughters. She's now a multiple amputee. She says hospitalizations after unlicensed cosmetic procedures led to life-threatening infections. Doctors removed her limbs last year to save her life.
"I got the butt implants five years ago," said Brown. "For five years, I lived in pain. Excruciating pain."
April Brown won't identify the unlicensed practitioner who injected her with silicone. She will only say it was somewhere near Western and Manchester. Brown told NBCLosAngeles.com that her own lack of self-esteem issues are mostly to blame.

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - One of the most recent studies on self-harm has uncovered not only new information about adolescents, but also surprising data on African American boys.
"Based on what people once thought about this, we might have thought that white youth and in particular white girls, would be more likely to engage in this behavior. We never would have expected that African American boys were at such high risk," said study author Dr. Kim Gratz.
