Many may still remember that day in 1991 when former NBA Lakers player, Earvin “Magic” Johnson announced he had contracted HIV, and shocked the world. Nobody knew what to expect, or how long he would survive the disease, not even Johnson himself. That was twenty-years ago.

In an in-depth interview with Newsweek’s Allison Samuels, Johnson shared some of his struggles, fears, and triumphs living with HIV. The first 5 years was the hardest, he recalled. But, determined to fight the disease, Johnson stayed strong and kept a positive outlook on life.
“This happened to me for a reason, and I know it was for me to help someone else,” said Johnson. “I'm blessed that the medicine I take really worked well with my body and makeup. It doesn't work like that for everyone. A lot of people haven't been as fortunate as I have.”
