The absence of African American's at the Oscars this year has a lot of celebrities opening up and voicing their opinions.

“It's not surprising to me,” said stand up comedian Sommore in a recent interview with Rolling Out magazine. “We can't forget that, WE are still not equal…. I think that we just basically have to take that as a motivation to be more in control of our own destiny from now on.”

Sommore also explained that instead of questioning the success of entertainers, black people need more training in supporting what they do, if we ever want to see any progress.

Having started her own production company after 20 years in the business, actress Vivica A. Fox is a great example of someone who is taking control of their own destiny. She recently sat down with Madame Noire and spoke a great deal about her career, negative roles for black women in film, her current and upcoming projects, and more.

“A lot of people were teasing me because some of my films were going straight to DVD, but what they don’t understand is that I’m establishing the brand of Vivica Fox Productions…. Each time the budget gets bigger and better. You have to start somewhere,” said Viv.
